Biodiversity Loss
“What you do makes a difference, and you have to decide what kind of difference you want to make.”
– Dr Jane Goodall, Scientist & Activist
How does biodiversity loss intersect with climate?
Biodiversity loss and climate change are interconnected and mutually reinforcing. Climate change exacerbates the loss of biodiversity, while biodiversity loss further contributes to climate change. Rising temperatures, habitat destruction, and extreme weather events caused by climate change directly impact ecosystems and lead to the loss of plant and animal species. In turn, the decline of biodiversity reduces ecosystem resilience and its ability to mitigate climate change impacts. Biodiverse ecosystems, such as forests and wetlands, store carbon, regulate climate patterns, and provide essential services. Conserving biodiversity is vital for climate change adaptation and mitigation, as healthy ecosystems help to sequester carbon, maintain water cycles, and support human well-being. Protecting and restoring biodiversity is essential for preserving the Earth's natural systems and tackling the challenges posed by climate change.
Working on Biodiversity Loss
"In nature, nothing exists alone." – Rachel Carson, Silent Spring (1962)
Here are some Atlantic-based non-profit organizations looking at biodiversity loss and habitat restoration.
Coastal Action
For over 29 years, our mission has been to protect and restore the environment through research, education, action, and community engagement. We're very much a 'boots on the ground' type of organization with a strong focus on research, monitoring, restoration, and education.
The Nature Conservancy
The Nature Conservancy, which has been working in the Atlantic Forest since 1991 with a wide range of partners, has an ambitious plan to protect and restore 30 million acres of this magnificent forest by 2015.
Ecology Action Centre
The Ecology Action Centre is a member-based environmental charity in Nova Scotia. Since 1971, we've taken leadership on critical environmental issues from biodiversity protection to climate change to environmental justice.
NB Environmental Network
The Collaborative Effort on Biodiversity in New Brunswick is a multi-stakeholder effort to address the protection of biodiversity and species-at-risk.
