Water
“Water is life’s matter and matrix, mother and medium. There is no life without water.”
– Albert Szent-Gyorgyi, M.D. Discoverer of Vitamin C
How does water intersect with climate?
Water and climate are deeply interconnected, with climate change significantly impacting water resources and hydrological cycles. Rising temperatures lead to increased evaporation rates, altering precipitation patterns and exacerbating drought conditions in some regions while causing intense rainfall events and floods in others. Melting glaciers and reduced snowfall affect the availability of freshwater sources, impacting water supply for agriculture, industry, and human consumption. Additionally, sea-level rise can lead to saltwater intrusion, jeopardizing coastal freshwater resources. Mitigating and adapting to these water-climate intersections require sustainable water management practices, improved water infrastructure, and conservation efforts. Collaborative approaches are needed to address water scarcity, ensure equitable access to clean water, and build resilient communities in the face of a changing climate.
